Clinical Experience

2014 - Present, Private Practice, Licensed Clinical Psychologist

Provide individual psychotherapy to adults and group psychotherapy for adults with gender dysphoria and/or transgender experience. Also provide evaluations and letters for gender affirmation hormone treatment and surgeries.  

2013 - 2014, University of TX -Arlington Counseling and Psychological Services, Staff Psychologist: 

Provided short-term and long-term individual psychotherapy and group psychotherapy to university students who ranged in age from 18 to 50.  Treated problems ranging from adjustment disorders to severe, chronic mental illness. Worked with multidisciplinary team with diverse patients.

 

2012 - 2013, Kansas City Veterans Medical Center, Postdoctoral Fellowship: 

Provided short-term and long-term individual and group psychotherapy (sometimes using structured treatments) for depression, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders as well as for other mental illnesses. Worked with veterans with combat trauma, military sexual trauma, and/or other trauma. Conducted psychiatric evaluations for organ transplants, compensation and pension evaluations, PTSD diagnostic evaluations, personality assessments, and neuropsychological assessments for brain injuries or dementia. Developed and implemented a mindfulness based class and intervention for the substance abuse rehabilitation and treatment program. Worked on multidisciplinary team with diverse patients.

 

2011 - 2012, University of TX - Arlington Mental Health Center, Internship: 

Provided short-term and long-term individual psychotherapy to university students who ranged in age from 18 to 60, were diverse in ethnicty and sexual orientation and had problems ranging from depression, anxiety, grief, and bipolar to stage of life issues.

 

2010 - 2011, Galaxy Counseling Center, Internship: 

Provided individual, couples and group psychotherapy to adults and adolescents. Provided play therapy to children. Completed assessments for adults applying for disability, some of whom had comorbid medical and mental illnesses.  

 

2010 - 2012, Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance,  Support Group Co-Facilitator: 

Co-facilitated a monthly support group for adults with depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders. 

 

2010 - 2012 and 2008 - 2009, University of TX Southwestern Medical Center, Psychoneuroendocrine Research Lab, Internship: 

Completed my dissertation, The Impact of Cognitive Functioning on Treatment Adherence in Comorbid Bipolar Disorder and Cocaine Dependence. Conducted weekly clinical and cognitive assessments of research participants with co-morbid major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder and substance dependence. Consulted with a psychiatrist on participants’ treatment. Completed weekly progress notes. Provided supportive and cognitive behavioral therapy to research participants.

 

2010 July - Dec., Parkland Memorial Hospital Psychiatric Emergency Room, Practicum: 

Assisted psychiatric emergency room psychiatrists, social workers, and nurses with the management and care of the patients. 

 

2009 -  2010, Johnson - Somervell Counties Adult Probation, Practicum: 

Provided weekly individual psychotherapy and group anger management therapy for adults with mental illness and/or substance use disorders. Consulted with probation officers as appropriate. Completed diagnostic, personality, and intelligence assessments. 

 

2009 - 2012, Southwestern Psychotherapy Clinic, Therapist-in-Training: 

Provided long-term individual psychotherapy to patients with depression, ADHD, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and personality disorders. 

 

2009 Summer, Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center, Pre-practicum: 

Provided individual psychotherapy and anger management group therapy for adolescents age 12-17 who had substance use disorders, conduct disorder, depression, and anxiety. Provided cognitive ability and achievement tests with adolescents ages 12-17. 

 

2007 - 2008, University of MS Medical Center, Addictions Research & Treatment Lab, Research Recruiter/Interviewer: 

Conducted research with men in inpatient treatment centers for substance use disorders. Duties included administering and scoring the Structured Clinical Interview for Antisocial Personality Disorder, neuropsychological assessments, a computerized diagnostic interview for substance use disorders, and various psychological questionnaires on intimate partner violence and impulsivity. 

 

2007 - 2008, Contact the Crisis Line, Volunteer: 

Provided telephone crisis counseling to people with mental illness and/or suicidal ideation, and assisted people with referrals to social service agencies.

 

2002 - 2003, Region 8 Mental Health Center, Case Manager: 

Provided case management services and supportive and crisis counseling to low-income adults with chronic, severe mental illness including but not limited to depression, bipolar, schizophrenia, personality disorders, and anxiety disorders.
